Hurst Publishers

Founded by Christopher Hurst in 1969, Hurst is an independent non-fiction publisher based in London but publishing globally on current affairs, social issues, history and politics.

From its modest beginnings in a tiny office above the Africa Centre in Covent Garden to its current location at Somerset House, Hurst has grown its list from specialist interest to trade books, pioneering authors and topics overlooked by commercial presses, including underreported crises in Africa and Southeast Europe and ground-breaking histories of African Europeans and the British in India. Authors include Shashi Tharoor, Olivette Otele, Kenan Malik, David Kilcullen, Sarah Jaffe, Brian Klaas, David Omand, Susan Williams, Bruno Maçães, Diana Darke, and Phil Tinline.

While growing the publishing programme and elevating its public profile, Hurst has aimed to retain Christopher Hurst’s independence of spirit and commitment to original, provocative and rigorous thinking.
