…to dismiss the genre of self-improvement wholesale, suggests the cultural historian Anna Katharina Schaffner, would be to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For once we set aside the noisy boosterism of titles such as Think and Grow Rich (1937) and Awaken the Giant Within (1991), it becomes apparent that many of the books which top the bestseller lists are descendants of classical philosophic and religious texts and traditions that have sustained serious seekers for centuries.
