I am the Sales Representative for a region that encompasses St Ives, Aberystwyth, Southwark and everywhere in between. This tenuous territory is, loosely speaking, anywhere south of the M4 and the River Thames although it is not limited by either, as shown by my visits to the Bell Bookshop in Henley and encounters with their canines. I have worked for Yale Representation since 2009.
I gained a BA in English Literature at Goldsmiths College; a degree funded by working as an accounts' clerk in an insurance brokerage. I then came to Yale University Press as receptionist, keen to find a way into the publishing industry and to be among books and book lovers. I was soon handed editorial duties and from there recruited for Yale Representation’s sales team.
As well as visiting chains such as Waterstones, Blackwells and Foyles, I regularly attend to independents, museums and galleries both large and small throughout my territory. From accounts at tourist hotspots such as Kew Gardens, the National Theatre and Tate St Ives, I also visit an array of other shops and institutions such as Toppings and Mr B’s in Bath, the Arnolfini and Stanfords in Bristol, and Buckfast Abbey and NHBS in Devon. This variety is the aspect of the job I relish. The mix of people and personalities in public spaces increases the potential for the unexpected – indeed, an appointment was once interrupted by a man proudly displaying his collection of used cigarette butts – and it is this that keeps me on my toes.
